 Respite services provide short-term care for individuals who are unable to care for themselves, offering temporary relief to their unpaid primary caregivers. These services are essential in preventing caregiver burnout and ensuring that the individual can remain in their home or community setting rather than facing institutionalization. 

 Eligibility for Agency-Directed Respite Services

Agency-Directed Respite Services are specifically designed for individuals who have an unpaid primary caregiver. These caregivers may require temporary relief to rest, attend to personal matters, or take a break from caregiving responsibilities.

Respite care under the Agency-Directed model involves unskilled, hands-on care of a supportive or health-related nature. Services may include:

• Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and toileting.
• Supporting access to community activities.
• Monitoring of self-administered medications or other basic medical needs.
• Providing supervision to ensure safety and well-being.
• Monitoring the individual’s health status and physical condition.
• Offering personal care services in work environments, where applicable.

• Respite care can be provided in the individual’s home or other community settings.
• The service is capped at 480 hours per person per state fiscal year, regardless of whether it is delivered through the Agency-Directed model, the Consumer-Directed model, or a combination of both.
• If respite services are the only support the individual receives, at least one hour of service must be provided every 30 days.

This service ensures that unpaid caregivers can take time for themselves while maintaining the quality of care for their loved ones. It helps reduce caregiver stress, improves overall well-being, and supports the goal of community-based living for the individual.
